Interactive exhibits at Tropical World

History
The origins of Tropical World date back to 1911, when the "Coronation House" was built in the Canal Gardens area of Roundhay Park. After several renovations and modernizations, the current Tropical World was opened in 1988. In 2008, the facility was renamed "The Arnold and Marjorie Ziff Tropical World" in honor of its supporters. A comprehensive renovation in 2015 introduced new themed areas and expanded the exhibition with numerous new species.

Attractions and Exhibitions
Tropical World consists of several climate-controlled glasshouses that replicate various tropical habitats. The main areas include:

Butterfly house and aquarium combo

- Butterfly House: A lush, swamp-like space where colorful butterflies fly freely. Terrapins and Koi carp inhabit the ponds, while Morelet's crocodiles are housed in special enclosures.

- Aquarium: Designed with an Aztec theme, it houses both freshwater and saltwater species, including poison dart frogs, axolotls, clownfish, octopuses, stingrays, seahorses, red-bellied piranhas, and catfish.

- Rainforest Area: This section features a waterfall, tropical fish, leafcutter ants, and various bird species. Reptile exhibits with snakes, lizards, and iguanas are located on the upper level.

- Desert House: Visitors can observe a group of meerkats, turtles, and various desert birds here.

- Night Area: Specifically designed for nocturnal animals, this area includes bats, armadillos, Madagascan giant jumping rats, Egyptian fruit bats, bushbabies, mouse lemurs, and potoroos.

It’s a nice place. Friendly staff members. It does get warm in a few rooms so beware of that, when I went there was a school trip happening it would be nice if it says on website there would be a school trip as it would be nice to avoid running kids misbehaving

It's ok if you're in the area but not worth travelling to as it's small and expensive entry price

Arrived just as a coach load of school children turned up luckily we bypassed them!! Very well presented with signs explaining which way to go and explore all types of tropical animals. Larger than first expected, cheap place to visit killed a bit of time, my boy would love it.

1st time going, I like Tropical World more than Bugtopia.. More to see and more to explore, only downside was I don't think it's worth the price they charge, we went as a family of 6. Not only the price but the cafe/restaurant is disgusting, I couldn't eat from there it is really not where you want to eat but somewhere you wipe your feet coming out 🤢🤮 I think there was more food on the floor than on the visitors plates!! The door out of the cafe/restaurant wouldn't shut so it was cold and too heavy for the elderly exiting.. Apart from that there's lots to see and we enjoyed it 🙂

Barely any thing there to see now. Empty tanks and enclosures. A bit of a pointless outing and a waste of almost £30 after the kids want to go in the gift shop

Lovely place with tropical vibes. Plenty of fish tanks with different sizes and colours. Not as many butterflies as I expected. Crocodile was majestic and different other tropical animals. There was a desert section which was also kept well within theme. We came early with tickets booked online and we didn't have to wait at all. Lovely place to take children

Sadly place is all over. Should probably shut it down for refurbishment instead of keeping it open charging people for closed exhibits. Also glass is mainly that dirty you can hardly see through. Only fully stocked is the shop full of Chinese plastic and rubber . Won't come back any time soon

Having visited years ago I thought tropical world would be a great day out with our little one. Oh how wrong I was. £19 for 2 adults, free for under 3’s. Half of the enclosures were empty, I could count on one hand the animals we saw. It’s certainly gone downhill since the last time I visited and I wouldn’t recommend to anyone, absolute waste of money.

Great winters experience, not too expensive, not massive but good if you make a point of looking at everything

Great value for money, lots of different animals to see and space for kids to explore. Investment is being made so some areas are under development in 2024/25 but there's still plenty to see. Decent cafe inside and in summer a kiosk outside. Nice gardens surrounding it which are free to visit, and the huge Roundhay Park over the road with 2 play parks, cafe, lakes and tonnes of space to explore

A great place for kids and adults with great friendly staff and many exhibits. Cafe is well stocked and again friendly staff. Price wise, it's one of the cheaper things to do and attend in Leeds. Highly reccomended!
